Overview

Garmin GMR 18/24 xHD3 Radome Marine Radar System

Introduction

The Garmin GMR 18/24 xHD3 Radome delivers 4-kilowatt marine radar performance in a compact, dome-style package designed for recreational and professional vessels. This solid-state radar system extends detection to 48 nautical miles while filtering sea clutter and interference, addressing the core challenge all mariners face: seeing through weather and maritime traffic to navigate safely in poor visibility. The radome's high-resolution scanning provides consistent target separation and real-time vessel tracking without the signal dropout common to older radar technology.

Key Features

  • 4-kilowatt power output for extended detection capability
  • Maximum scanning range of 48 nautical miles
  • Rotation speed up to 60 RPM for rapid target updates
  • MARPA automatic target tracking monitors up to 30 simultaneous contacts
  • Scan Averaging Technology reduces sea clutter interference by up to 75 percent
  • Dynamic Auto Gain adjusts receiver sensitivity automatically based on sea conditions
  • True Echo Trails create historical vessel track lines for situational awareness

Data Insights

The GMR 18/24 xHD3 employs narrow horizontal beamwidth scanning architecture that achieves high target separation and consistent object detection across all ranges. Scan Averaging Technology processes multiple radar pulses to eliminate false targets caused by wave reflection and precipitation, delivering up to 75 percent interference reduction. This processing method significantly improves confidence in both short-range collision avoidance and long-range weather pattern identification. The dual-range display capability allows simultaneous monitoring of close-quarters traffic within 2 nautical miles while tracking distant storm cells and shipping lanes at full 48-nautical-mile range.

Usage Instructions

Mount the radome at the highest practical point on your vessel to maximize line-of-sight coverage and minimize blind zones caused by mast and superstructure shadowing. Connect the system to a compatible Garmin chartplotter using the included network cable. Activate the split-screen dual-range display to monitor both near and far range data simultaneously. Adjust Dynamic Auto Gain settings to match current sea state and precipitation intensity—typically between calm and rough conditions—then enable True Echo Trails to track vessel movements over time. Recalibrate gain settings when sea conditions change significantly or when transitioning between open water and coastal environments.

Design and Material

The radome features a streamlined, low-profile dome shape that reduces wind loading and preserves vessel aesthetics. Its compact footprint and relatively light construction facilitate roof or mast mounting on vessels from 30 to 150 feet without structural reinforcement.

  • Available in 18-inch or 24-inch diameter configurations for flexible installation options
  • Radome housing constructed from UV-resistant composite material rated for extended saltwater exposure
  • Quiet motor drive operates at minimal RPM with sound isolation, reducing crew fatigue
  • Lightweight design significantly lighter than traditional open-array systems, improving handling and mounting stability
  • Seamless integration with the entire Garmin GPSMAP and EchoMAP chartplotter ecosystem via single network connection
  • Sealed bearing and motor assembly prevents saltwater ingress while withstanding spray and wave wash

Final Verdict

The Garmin GMR 18/24 xHD3 Radome is essential equipment for any vessel operator who demands reliable collision avoidance and weather awareness in low-visibility conditions. Its combination of 4-kilowatt power output, 48-nautical-mile range, 75 percent sea clutter filtering, and automatic tracking of 30 simultaneous targets solves the detection problems that threaten every mariner. The radome's compact design and quiet operation make it practical for vessels where traditional radar systems create installation and noise concerns. For serious boaters and professional mariners seeking modern radar performance without the weight and maintenance demands of legacy equipment, this system delivers measurable safety improvements.
