Overview
Garmin Varia eRTL615 Radar Tail Light for eBikes
Introduction
The Garmin Varia eRTL615 combines rearview radar detection with integrated tail lighting in a single unit powered directly by your eBike battery, eliminating the need for a separate rechargeable device. This battery-free design delivers real-time alerts when vehicles approach from behind, helping eBike riders maintain situational awareness on busy roads and in variable traffic conditions.
Key Features
- 24 GHz rearview radar with vehicle detection up to 150 yards (140 meters) behind your position
- Daytime tail light visibility extending 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) to approaching motorists
- Four adjustable light modes, including a Peloton mode designed for group riding at reduced intensity
- Battery-free operation powered directly by compatible eBike battery systems via dedicated Garmin cable
- ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity to pair with compatible Garmin wearables, Edge cycling computers, and the Varia smartphone app
- Compact design supporting universal seat rail mounting and rack or pannier mounting configurations
Data Insights
The 150-yard detection range provides approximately 5-8 seconds of advance warning at highway speeds, giving eBike riders critical time to react to approaching traffic. Daytime visibility reaching 1 mile ensures your presence registers to motorists during daylight hours when rider visibility becomes critical. The radar's 24 GHz frequency delivers consistent performance in varying weather conditions while the customizable light modes—including the Peloton mode that reduces flash intensity for group riding—optimize visibility without creating hazards or distractions among nearby cyclists.
Usage Instructions
Mount the Varia eRTL615 to your eBike using either the universal seat rail mount or rack mount option. Connect the device to your eBike battery using a compatible Garmin power cable (sold separately). Pair the unit with your compatible Garmin wearable device, Edge cycling computer, or smartphone via the Varia app using ANT+ or Bluetooth Low Energy. Select your preferred light mode before riding and monitor incoming radar alerts on your paired display device during your ride.
Design & Material
The Varia eRTL615 features a streamlined, compact form factor integrated into a dark-colored housing designed to minimize visual clutter on eBike frame geometries. The central red LED array provides the tail light function while flanking side panels accommodate status indicators and connectivity signaling. All components are engineered for outdoor durability and resistance to moisture exposure typical of eBike operation.
- Integrated 24 GHz radar antenna housed within compact plastic and rubber construction
- Central red LED tail light array for daytime and low-light visibility
- Sleek, rounded profile designed to match modern eBike aesthetics
- Rubberized cable connector and strain relief designed for vibration resistance during riding
- Universal mounting hardware supporting both seat rail and rack/pannier configurations
- Weather-resistant exterior construction rated for outdoor eBike exposure and variable riding conditions
Final Verdict
The Garmin Varia eRTL615 is essential equipment for eBike riders commuting in traffic or sharing roads with motorized vehicles. Its battery-free operation eliminates charging concerns, the 150-yard radar detection provides actionable early warning, and the 1-mile daytime visibility keeps your presence visible to approaching drivers. With seamless integration into the Garmin ecosystem and flexible mounting options for any eBike setup, this device transforms rear-facing awareness from guesswork into actionable, real-time data—invest in the Varia eRTL615 to ride with confidence on high-traffic routes.
